PLEASE, PEOPLE, DO NOT DO THE "IPOD" WEDDING

I'm going to keep this short and sweet. PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT AN IPOD RECEPTION!! I know that times are tough right now and money is tight for most of us, but if you're planning an affair, especially a wedding, and find it necessary to trim the bottom line, don't go about it in this manner. "Sure", you say, "He's a disc jockey and needs the work." Let me tell you what the caterers are saying about these affairs. They are using words and phrases such as, "It was a nightmare", "horrible", "I almost felt like I had to apologize to the guests", "I always try to talk them out of it".

Let's face it, you will hear all of your favorite songs and certainly, the price is right, but what you will not get is a seasoned emcee who knows how to handle a wedding. One who can coordinate with the banquet manager to keep the affair seemless. You will not get someone to effectively read the crowd and keep the party pumping and the flow of dancing consistent. You will not be able to honor requests, thus alienating some of your guests. You will not have an experienced dj to do what they do best. YOU WILL regret your decision.

Attack of the Killer Bees

So I'm setting up for an outdoor ceremony for Naomi and Mike at Mercer Museum in Doylestown, Pa. on Sept. 6, 09 when I inadvertently set my speaker down on a nest of ground bees. Within seconds, my speaker was swarmed by about 250 screaming mad bees. I, of course, high-tailed it out of there unscathed. What to do now? I decided to set up with my other speaker and worry about the bees later, figuring they might settle down. Nothing doing! I finished setting up for the ceremony, all the while monitoring the bee situation, which seemed to be(e) getting worse. It was like something out of a movie.

Shortly before the ceremony was about to begin, Mike said that he was "going in" to get my speaker. By this time, I was perfectly content to leave it where it was, do the reception with one speaker, which would have been more than enough sound for the Elkins Gallery, and try to retrieve my speaker after the sun went down, and hopefully, the bees as well. The only problem was the impending threat of rain. I told Mike, "No way!! You're the groom. If you go in there, those bees will be all over you". Luckily, he thought better of it. One of his groomsman,though, Eric, did not. With Eric at his side, Mike Says, "We're going to get your speaker". Again, I protested, "Please, don't!" Eric was having nothing of it. "I'm not allergic to bee stings. I'll do it. No problem". Before I could say anything else, he calmly walked up to the speaker, at which point I heard him say, "Wow, this is really bad!" He grabbed the speaker and slid it as far away from the bees as he could, taking a few "hits" in the process. Within about thirty seconds, the bees had retreated back to their nest in the ground and Eric was fine. The ceremony went on without a hitch and I had a new hero in my life. I made sure to tell him so. Thank you, Eric.

Jamie and Stacey

Jamie and Stacey "tied the knot," literally, in a very elegant fashion on Sept. 19, 09. After some initial nerves and a beautiful Celtic wedding ceremony in which their sons shared in the readings, everyone settled in for the clebration. Held at 181 Park Ave. in Chalfont, Pa. on a cool night under the tent, their two respective "villages" ate, drank and partied through the night. Stacey and Jamie were awesome to work with, easy-going, yet extremely organized (Stacey's forte'). It was great to see all of Jamie's family again, and to get to know Stacey and hers. I certainly wish them all the best, their boys as well, as they take this newly formed family into the future.

Ria and Justin

Ria and Justin were married on May 15th, 09 at Cairnwood Mansion in Bryn Athyn, Pa. The weather was perfect and so was the couple. Ria was initially concerned that her small crowd might not be so motivated to dance, but after a short while, they came to life and lit up the dance floor. They were super-great folks to work with and we certainly wish them the very best.

I have been in the wedding business for over twenty years, now, and have worked with probably hundreds of photographers. A few years back, I had the opportunity to meet and work with Jackie Bayne. It didn't take me long to realize that she was in a league of her own- very funky, very cool, very cutting edge- a true artist. After viewing some of the galleries on her website, I wondered to myself why she was wasting her time in the wedding business. She should be shooting for some high profile magazine, I thought. As our paths continued to cross over time and I saw more and more of her work, it became evident that shooting for some magazine would just hold her back, stifle her. Jackie absolutely thrives as a wedding photographer and there is no containing her creative juices. She has recently married macho photographer dude, Pat, and together they run Love Shack Photo.

Candy and Hassan

What a great couple! We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day. Everything was perfect- the weather, the setting, the guests, and, of course, the bride and groom. Hailing from Californa, Candy and Hassan joined with their family and friends at Fonthill Castle in Doylestown, Pa. for their fairy tale wedding.

Highlights:

Candy's sister and brother both lent their musical talents during the reception and ceremony, on guitar and vocals.

Oh how the ladies loved to dance with Hassan. ( I must say, he certainly seemed to be eating it up).

These two were so great to work with- very unassuming and laid back. Working with their musical suggestions, they just let me do my thing, jumped in with both feet and had a blast. We certainly wish them all the best!!

Christine and Justin

Christine and Justin are my most recent clients. They were married on January 3rd at Marsha Brown in New Hope where I perfomed for the ceremony and reception. What an awesome couple!! From the moment Christine first contacted me right through to the end of the affair, they were so easy to work with. They were open to my suggestions and knew exactly what they wanted for all the details of their wedding. Everything came together beautifully. They honeymooned at the Spa at the Hotel Hershey. I wish all the best for this great couple who are obviously head-over-heels in love. Congratulations to two very cool people!!

2008 "RAP-UP"

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND WELCOME TO THE AMBIANCE BLOG!!! Blogging is a new adventure for me so please be patient until I get the hang of this- (hopefully there's not a huge learning curve here). Anyway, 2008 was a great year for Ambiance. It was our busiest and most successful year to date. Tons of weddings, awesome couples and lots of good times!! New equipment- going digital (again, hopefully not a huge learning curve). Lots of great memories.

It is my hope to use this blog to keep you up to date with recent affairs, trends in the dj business, upcoming events, successes, memories, concerns, etc., etc., etc. Let me know what you'd like to see here and please post any questions or comments.

My ultimate hope for this space is just to let my hair down and have some fun. Please visit often and enjoy the ride.
